It is easy to describe success in terms of money, fame and reputation. ButI believe that success is not external. I believe that success comes fromwithin. My definition of success is to be true to yourself, and be true toothers. That means, that you must cherish your personal ideal even in the faceof adversity. I also believe that success is not discriminatory. Success is notrestricted to such a class of people, in fact, it may be achieved by any personirrespective of his race, creed, gender and economic background. A good exampleof success is that of Beethoven. He is one of the world's most famous composers,yet he was deaf. He could not hear the majestic pieces of music that he created.Yet, in the face of this adversity, he was able to maintain his ideals''that ofcomposing music.

To exemplify what success means to me, I pose a question to all of you.What brings us together here today? I believe that it is the beauty of thespoken word. The effect of pause and the sound of rhetoric are unique to thespoken word. I believe the beauty of the spoken word is even stronger for thosewho have difficulty in expressing themselves. These people are reclusive and hadtheir emotions hidden within them. I once went to Australia and I saw twopictures, Once was drawn by a normal child, the other was drawn by a child withsocial inhibitions. The picture drawn by the normal child was simple and plain.The other was life'like, full of details and imagination. What this shows isthat these are ideas, emotions and feelings that are locked internally in thesechildren.

My ideal is to be the key, spreading the beauty of the spoken words tothese children. These children have been neglected, but I feel that I can andshould help these children to find themselves and be able to expressthemselves.

I realize that this is a difficult task, and there are many obstacles onthe way. But I believe in my ideals and I will stick to them''even in the faceof adversity. Hardly can we forget the time when our society faced the grave threat fromthe life-and-death disease--sars. yet, even during those dreadful times, someafflicted people remained optimistic. instead of wearing neutral white masks,some people turned to colouful ones, and thus display a happy mood. and somecreative people dubbed sars to mean "smile and remain smiling." i was deeplytouched by their optimisim, nearly forgetting that we're still in a battle.people who survive these kinds of circumstances, (at some point)decide in theirminds to carry on in spite of the overwhelming odds.

Laid-off workers, typically regarded as the victims of economicadvancement, are subject to desperation that being unmeployed has brought onthem. but, encouragingly, we have witnessed some of them striving hard torebuild confidence toward life and discover new opportunities for demonstratingtheir values.

Although we cannot choose our appearance, inborn gifts and even avoidunexpected disasters and adversities, we do have the privilege to choose to liveoptimistcally,to love our lives, to have dreams, and to cherish hopes.

Every morning when we get up, we have a choice of how we want to approachlife that day. as for me, i choose to be cheerful.
